Education

IDENTIFIED CORE PROBLEMS IN EDUCATION Children with disabilities do not have access to education. Children with disabilities are not sufficiently guided on their career opportunities thereby limiting what the children can do. Children with disabilities have problems of accessibility within most school premises. Lack of trained teachers in inclusive education in most schools. Lack of teaching materials in most schools for children with disabilities. OUR OBJECTIVES To increase the number of children with disabilities attending primary and secondary education. To improve the learning environment for children with disabilities especially those in regular schools. To promote inclusive education of children with disabilities in the mainstream schools. In conjunction with Ministry of Education to rehabilitate, make adaptations and provide resource materials and restocking in all implementing schools. To promote teacher short-term training in disability and special needs teaching.

Health

IDENTIFIED CORE PROBLEMS IN HEALTH Children with disabilities have no access to specialized health services which sometimes leads to the deterioration of their conditions Some parents are unaware of health related problems to such an extent that the late identification and treatment of the problem eventually results to disability. Children with disabilities lack modern devices that can be used as mobility aids and other devices that can improve the quality of life of children with disabilities. Lack of Psychologists and Sign Languages Interpreters in health centers. OUR OBJECTIVES To improve access to health care and treatment by children/youngsters with disabilities. To improve the physical functionality of children with disabilities through surgeries and physiotherapy. To provide relevant mobility aids such as wheelchairs, crutches, walking canes, and other assistive devices such as hearing aids.

Child Protection

IDENTIFIED CORE PROBLEMS IN CHILD PROTECTION Children with disabilities are more vulnerable to abuse both in the home and school environment. Children with disabilities face stigmatization due to negative attitudes by society which leads to exclusion and marginalization. Children with disabilities are also abused by their caregivers who are entrusted to look after them. OUR OBJECTIVES To sensitize communities to respect and protect the rights of children with disabilities. To promote the safety, human rights, wellbeing, resilience and health development of children with disabilities. To strengthen the skills and capacities of institutions and communities towards the elimination of violence and exploitation against children with disabilities. To conduct child counselling to children with disabilities in order to increase their self-esteem and inculcate a positive mindset.

Inclusion

IDENTIFIED CORE PROBLEMS IN INCLUSION Disabled children and their families suffer stigma and discrimination which includes communication, environmental, attitudinal and situational barriers. OUR OBJECTIVES To improve participation of children with disabilities in various activities within their families, communities and schools

Work and Income

Work and Income IDENTIFIED CORE PROBLEMS IN WORK AND INCOME Children who fail to do well at school, eventually drop out and they lack any other means of support to enable them contribute meaningfully in society. There is high unemployment levels among youngsters with disabilities.

Lack of skills training centres for youth with disabilities.
Children with disabilities and their families cannot afford to meet the daily basic needs as most of them live below the poverty datum line.
Lack of deliberate Policy by the Government to compel companies or Government Ministries to employ person with disabilities.

OUR OBJECTIVES

To empower youngsters with disabilities between the ages of 18 – 25 to become financially self reliant.
To facilitate vocational training to enable youngsters with disabilities to gain employment or start their own businesses.
To economically empower persons with disabilities through employment in the general employment sector and or engage in small scale business entrepreneurship.
To facilitate micro credit loan scheme for small scale entrepreneurship to engage in running of small scale businesses on a self-employed basis.
To conduct advocacy campaign to facilitate job placement for persons with disabilities through the Disabled People’s Organisation (DPOs).
